Sail Loot Podcast 033: Andy Schell’s Isbjorn Sailing Money

By on January 28, 2016

This stuff makes me smile. Here is somebody that is willing to share the financial details about a sailing business that has been created from scratch.

We were able to catch up with Andy Schell. Or, rather, he was able to touch base with Sail Loot. We both listen to each others’ podcasts. He hosts a sailing podcast over at 59º-North, and it is a fun and inspiring listen every single time.

In the last year, Andy and his wife, Mia, have started a business taking people on sailing passages on their 1972 S&S Swan 48, Isbjorn. A few months in, Andy got thinking about the finances of the business and decide to write an essay about it so that he could share it on 59-North.com and on the 59º-North podcast.

The Money essay and podcast that Andy produced were so relevant to what we’re trying to share here at Sail Loot that we decided it had to be shared again! It was awesome of Andy to share the necessary audio portions from his podcast.

A Few Things You’ll Learn about Andy Schell, Mia, and 59-North in this episode:

  • How they’ve earned a living prior to starting their sailing business.
  • The single most important factor that contributed to the early success of their business/lifestyle model.
  • Where Andy started the 59-North Podcast.
  • Living Simply
  • Testing the Sailing Business Concept
  • The final price and terms of the loan on Isbjorn
  • Working the Isbjorn business plan in reverse.
  • How Andy and Mia use their credit cards.
  • The tools they use to run their business.
  • And Much More!
