Sail Loot Podcast 014: Sailing to Spearfish on Nate’s Nomad Trip

By on January 29, 2015

Nate Niehuus has spent a lot of life traveling the world. As a child, he spent time all over Europe with his family.

He and his family did settle down in Bellville, Texas for a little while, but Nate took off again as soon as he could. Nate fought in Iraq, developed an addiction to motorcycles, free diving, and spearfishing, and eventually started traveling the world to find the best places to fish.

It just so happened that one of Nate’s friends, Ben Edelstein, had sailed around the world on his boat Gypsy Soul.  Nate, Ben, and a few other friends chartered a sailboat in the Bahamas, and that’s when Nate figured out what he wanted to do. It was time for Nate to buy his sailboat, and roam nomadically across the oceans in search of the most remote and untouched dive spots. It was time for Nate to go sailing to spearfish.

I had the pleasure of talking to Nate in this episode of the Sail Loot Podcast. We were able to pull it off even with the slow, cellular, wifi connection. Nate shares some great tips about living aboard, spearfishing, accepting crew on Nomad, and maintaining your boat so that you truly know your boat. Best of all, Nate shares his story. Enjoy!

A Few Things You’ll Learn About In This Episode:

  • How Nate’s passion for spearfishing got him to the point where his plan is to sail around the world.
  • Why Nate decided to start his adventure earlier than he originally planned.
  • What Nate figured out about “passive income”
  • The search for S/V Nomad.
  • Why Nate prefers doing maintenance on S/V Nomad himself.
